The first half of the Texas Collegiate League season came down to the final two games.

For the San Antonio River Monsters, it was a first half filled with challenges, adjustments and hard-fought lessons. But as the standings tightened in the final days, one thing became clear: this team was not going away quietly.

As of Thursday, June 25, the River Monsters sat in sixth place in the TCL standings. By Friday, they had dropped to seventh. With the first-half playoff race coming down to the wire, San Antonio needed wins, help and a little bit of chaos around the league.

They got all three.

On Saturday, the River Monsters defeated the Brazos Valley Bombers, keeping themselves alive in the race for the second seed. That same night, the Acadiana Cane Cutters dropped a wild, unforgettable five-hour game to Abilene, falling 21-20 in one of the most dramatic games of the TCL season.

Suddenly, the door was open.

The path was simple: San Antonio needed to win on Sunday, and Acadiana needed to lose one more time to Abilene. If both happened, the River Monsters would have completed a remarkable late push into the No. 2 seed.

San Antonio handled its part.

The River Monsters came out and took care of business, closing the first half with another win and extending their active winning streak to three games, tied for the longest active streak in the league entering the break.

But in the end, Acadiana answered back. The Cane Cutters shut down Abilene, 7-0, securing the second seed and ending San Antonio’s first-half playoff hopes.

Still, the finish told the story of what this River Monsters team has become.

They have had their struggles. They have faced difficult stretches. They have had to fight through close losses, road battles and the pressure of a crowded league race. But through it all, San Antonio showed heart, grit and the ability to keep pushing when the margin for error was gone.

The River Monsters did not control everything in the final weekend, but they controlled what they could. They won their games. They stayed alive until the final day. They forced the race to matter.

That is the kind of momentum a team can carry into the second half.

San Antonio also had several players make their mark across the TCL leaderboards during the first half.

Bruno Robles finished tied for second in the league with seven doubles, providing consistent extra-base production for the River Monsters lineup. Sammy Morales was tied for the league lead with three triples, while also leading the TCL with 57 assists defensively. Brian Buchanan remained one of the league’s top late-game arms, tied for the most saves with three.

On the mound, Matthew Foley established himself as one of the top strikeout arms in the TCL, finishing tied for the league lead with 29 strikeouts. Anthony Graziano was right behind him, ranking second with 27 strikeouts of his own.

Those numbers reflect more than individual success. They show the foundation San Antonio is building as it turns the page to the second half.

The River Monsters have proven they can compete. They have proven they can respond. And most importantly, they have proven they can finish strong.

The first half may not have ended with the playoff seed they were chasing, but it ended with belief, momentum and a clear message to the rest of the league.

The San Antonio River Monsters are still very much in the fight.
