River Monsters Sweep Acadiana, Bring Momentum Back to San Antonio
Momentum is defined as the strength or force an object has while moving.
In physics, that definition is straightforward. In sports, momentum means something more. It is the energy a team creates when the bats get hot, the pitching staff settles in, and the wins start stacking up.
After a successful homestand, the San Antonio River Monsters needed that kind of momentum to flip the script on what had been a difficult road trip.
They found it in Acadiana.
The River Monsters (8-9) picked up a two-game sweep over the Acadiana Cane Cutters (11-8), winning 9-3 on June 23 and following it with a dominant 13-5 victory on June 24.
San Antonio’s offense caught fire across both games, totaling 25 hits and showing the kind of production that can change the direction of a season.
In Tuesday’s win, catcher Bryce Wells helped lead the charge with three RBI on two hits. Right fielder Angel Martinez also delivered a strong performance, driving in two runs on three hits.
On the mound, Matthew Foley battled through traffic and gave the River Monsters a strong start, allowing just one run over five innings while working against a Cane Cutters lineup that produced six hits and five walks.
For six innings, Tuesday’s matchup was defined by pitching and defense on both sides. Then San Antonio broke the game open.
The River Monsters struck for three runs in the seventh inning and added four more in the eighth, pulling away late and securing their second win of the road trip.
Wednesday’s follow-up delivered a similar result, but this time San Antonio wasted no time taking control.
The River Monsters jumped out to a six-run lead in the top of the first inning, setting the tone early and immediately putting pressure on Acadiana. The inning was capped by a three-run home run from second baseman David Dehoyos, a swing that took the air out of the ballpark and gave San Antonio full command.
After allowing two runs through the first two innings, the River Monsters pitching staff settled in and kept Acadiana quiet until the ninth, when the game was already out of reach.
Anthony Graziano helped define the night on the mound, turning in 4 1/3 scoreless innings while limiting the Cane Cutters to just three hits. Aiden Cline was equally impressive in his two innings of work, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out five.
San Antonio’s lineup took full advantage of the strong combined effort from the pitching staff, finishing the night with 12 hits and seven walks in the 13-5 victory.
Along with Dehoyos’ early home run, catcher Carlos Chavez delivered a big swing of his own, crushing a two-run homer in the fourth inning to extend the River Monsters’ lead. Center fielder Eric Bacon also had a strong night at the plate, driving in two runs on three hits.
With hot bats, strong pitching, and renewed confidence, the River Monsters now return to the Alamo City for another two-game set against Acadiana, this time inside the friendly confines of Sullivan Field.
Momentum matters in physics, but it may matter even more in baseball.
With a two-game win streak in hand and six straight home games ahead, San Antonio has an opportunity to capitalize, build on its rhythm, and continue pushing toward the postseason.
